Since this function harmonized perfectly with Art Deco style- the mainstream aesthetic taste at the time-, jumping hour became especially popular. Among them, the Manufacture Niton was referred to as the master of creating jumping hour timepieces. Founded in 1919 in Geneva, Niton was commissioned by the likes of Patek Philippe, Cartier, and Lange & Sohne for its jumping hour movements. However, it is rather rare to see a jump hour watch bearing the name of Niton itself, especially those still in fine condition. Such models can be seen demonstrated in Lot 831, 837 and 838. Aside from Niton, jump hour timepieces from E. Gübelin are also very sought after. As forementioned, pocket and wristwatches fitted with this unusual display were mostly produced by the eminent makers, such as Audemars Piguet, Cartier and Patek Philippe during the 1920s to 1930s, so finding one from Gübelin is exceedingly rare. Yet, two of such pieces were uncovered and presented in this sale (as seen in Lot 832 and Lot 839). Two at the case back inside, 10340 and 75851 and the case back outside shows a 6-digit serial number which is just visible. Sadly the last digit is not clear. But in all probability the 6-digit serial number is 051514. Because there is a case back serial number it looks like it was sold by a retailer. Unknown which one. E. Gubelin placed their case number, just one, "between" the lugs, small side. Cartier placed for this period of time (1929), three serial numbers on the case, which is the case in this case. One for the movement, one for the case and one for the date when the movement and case were joined together, the date of issue of the complete watch. Usually all three numbers at the case back outside, "between" the lugs, longest side, like with this watch. But in this case, the 3 serial numbers are split into 2 serial numbers on the case back inside and 1 serial number on the case back outside. I can therefore not state with certainty whether this watch was sold by Cartier.
